Meditate or Medicate?
I just finished reading the book “Clean”, which is a book written by U.S. cardiologist, Alejandro Junger, M.D. He describes in a very straight forward style, the power of detoxing the body; but moreover, it is about his personal transformation of becoming seriously ill from the stress of being a doctor in the U.S. and his path to recovering from that intense stress.
Alejandro ended up going to India to heal himself from depression. What he learned there totally changed his life and the way he relates to his patients. He was able to regain his health and return a new man. But when he returned to the U.S. — his depression came back. He wanted to understand why and began to discover the effects of stress on the physical body.
In India, the Sanskrit word for Ayurveda, can be translated as, “the science of longevity.” What he appreciated the most about this ancient practice of treating dis-EASE is that it carries with it a multifaceted approach to wellness that includes the mind and body as one “whole.” He refers to this undeniable reality as modern medicine’s “blind spot.”
Learning to meditate is what he says saved his life and allowed him to heal his depression. But, the toxins from his fast paced “doctor life-style” (which consisted of way too many convenience foods) is what derailed his brain chemistry in the first place. He explains how he made his way “home” from this dark place and how cleansing his body was an essential step in this process.
Have you meditated today? Well, close your eyes and take a deep breath in. Ahhhhh… It’s that simple. How many of breaths add up to a “meditation?” Just start with one. Your done. Next time take two deep breaths. Developing a relationship with the space in between thoughts could save your life someday. It does take practice but the rewards of doing this simple meditation (one deep breath) could save you from medication. Whenever you feel stressed, anxious or triggered, take a deep breath.
Alejandro talks a lot about the fundamentals of cleansing and detoxing: why it is so important and how to do it very simply. He says that we are killing ourselves with the same chemicals that we created to make life easier. Ironically, the greatest toxic load on the human body comes from our food supply.
Toxins cause inflammation which is the root of most every dis-EASE. I love that he states in his book that the word “disease” should be written dis-EASE, which is often how I spell it. His book is a good read. Especially for those people who aren’t sure if cleaning is a quakery. It is nice to see this type of information being created by a main stream doctor who was never taught about nutrition in medical school and wouldn’t have believed it if he hadn’t experienced it for himself. Way to go Dr. Junger!
Eckhart Tolle’s short video link (3 minutes) on taking One Conscious Breath. Very powerful example!
As you already know, detoxing your mind is just as important as detoxing the cells in your body.
Here is a link to one of my favorite people! He has helped me so much in detoxing my own mind. I hope to see Mooji while I am here in India. He has such a beautiful message and I find him deeply inspiring. He has lot’s of great U-tube videos. I often will listen to him for a few minutes just before I get on my yoga mat in the mornings.
