How To Shift Into Fat Burning Mode

Ketogenic DC_Custom Food PyramidSo, how do you get your metabolism to switch over to fat burning mode? Well, you need to communicate a different message to your metabolism so it stops storing fat and starts burning it.

The hormone with it’s hand firmly on this switch–is insulin. As long as insulin is in picture, your body has no choice but to store fat. Insulin tells your body to store fat. Period.

The only way to change that is to get carbohydrates out of your diet so insulin can take a break. To do this, you need to rely on other nutrients to take the place of carbohydrates.

That leaves only two nutrients left: fat and protein. When you restrict dietary carbohydrates, your body goes through a process of becoming “fat adapted” this means that the metabolism begins to shift tracks and starts looking for another fuel source.The process of becoming keto-adapated usually takes about 14 days in most people after carbohydrates are restricted and healthy fats come into the diet along with moderate amounts of clean protein.

When you make this metabolic shift you will know it because your body will begin to produce ketone bodies which are the bi-product of fat metabolism. You must check your blood or breath ketones to be certain that you have successfully become “fat-adapted” and are actually in nutritional ketosis.
